Since Canon EOS 80D is good for capturing still images and shooting videos, we decided to focus on lenses that fit that needs.
When Sigma introduced 18-35mm lens, they certainly set a new standard for DSLR camera as this is the first lens, throughout the zoom range, that offers f1.8 aperture with an APS-C format.
Build-wise, this standard zoom lens features a Thermally Stable Composite for its barrel.
This feature offers a greater elasticity (25%) compared to polycarbonate. Also, this lens has been equipped with optic special element/coating: 5 SLD glass elements, 4 glass mold aspherical elements; which work together to ensure high optical performance.
Its other key features are:
- It has A1 MTF measuring system.
- It has 46-megapixel for still images and 44-megapixel for recording videos.
- It has Hypersonic Motor for smoother automatic focusing and full-time manual focus.
Combine all features together and this lens becomes advantageous to use in shooting landscapes, still-life, portraits, starry skies, architecture and underwater shots.
The only downside of this lens is, it doesn’t have an image stabilization feature. So, handheld shooting isn’t advisable.
Note: Aside from Canon EF-S, this lens is also compatible to other DLSR cameras such as Nikon F (DX), Pentax KAF, Sigma SA Bayonet, Sony/Minolta Alpha DT.
When it comes to getting outstanding and crisp shots with shallow depth of field, excellent low light shots, and superb bokeh; you can count on to Canon EF-S 50mm. This is a prime lens that has a wide aperture lens that’s advantageous for shooting portraits and night photography.
Since this lens replaced the EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, Canon improved its focus motor, Stepper motor (STM). STM still deliver the same excellent image quality; their only difference is, it’s now much faster and closer to a near-silent focus motor.

On the other hand, unlike the first 2 we discussed, this lens has an image stabilization feature with a maximum of 4-stop advantage. Meaning, this feature will guarantee to have a better shooting performance and deliver sharp and stable image result no matter how challenging the shooting situations are.

- It was equipped with a new NANO USM technology. This technology is the combination of Ring USM and STM and works together to deliver highspeed autofocusing and at the same time, make it smoother and quieter autofocusing.
- It has an improved Autofocusing speed of up to 4.3x* for Tele end; while 2.5x for the wide end.
- This is also compatible with Canon’s new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1. This adapter provides electrical zooming that helps to deliver more natural zooming during the shooting of the video.

The only disadvantage of this lens is, it doesn’t have a weather sealing or moisture resistant feature. If you use it on your travel, ensure to give extra care when the weather isn’t in a good condition.
If Sigma 18-35mm lens set a new standard for DSLR camera when it has been introduced, so as its 17-50mm lens. This is Sigma’s first zoom lens, in this range, that offers optical stabilization with 4-stop advantage together with a fixed maximum aperture.
The optical stabilization is Sigma’s very own system that allows the users to use shutter speeds 4 stops slower, approximately. While the large aperture delivers a bright viewfinder image to help the users to confirm accurate focusing. Also, is designed to support the use of faster shutter speed.
This lens’ body is designed with an all-black plastic exterior, except for its lens mount which is made from metal. While its lens is coated with Super Multi-Layer coating that reduces flare and ghosting.
Its other key features are:
- This lens optics are equipped with 2 FLD glass elements that compensate for color aberration, 2 glass mold elements and 1 hybrid aspherical lens to give excellent correction.
- This lens has Hyper Sonic Motor that guarantee a faster and quieter autofocusing.

With this lens’ features and compact construction, this lens becomes ideal to use for travel, landscape, wedding and portrait photography. Since it has a 0.2x magnification, it also gives this lens a fair performance for macro photography.
The disadvantages of this lens are: it doesn’t have weather sealing and full-time manual focusing override. For the latter part, it’s a bit tedious since you have to manually switch the lens from auto to manual mode before you can move the manual focusing ring.
Note: Sigma 17-50mm is also compatible with Nikon, Pentax, Sony or any DLSR with APS-C image sensor format. But for Pentax mount, if the camera body doesn’t support HSM, auto focus will not be available.
Just like most lenses for DSLR, this 50mm lens is made with metal for its lens mount and plastic for its barrel. But certainly not for its lens. This lens was equipped with a combination of 2 high-refraction lens elements and a new Gaussian optics. This works together to eliminate astigmatism.
Unlike Sigma 17-50mm, this lens has a switch located on its barrel where you can choose between auto and manual focusing modes. This gives the user ability to adjust the focus setting even it’s set to autofocusing.
The biggest strengths of this lens are its Micro Ultra Sonic Motor (USM). This is the only EF lens that offers this autofocus system and at the same time offer a full-time manual focusing option. Also, its’ lens speed of f/1.4 which is great to use for available-light shooting.
The only disadvantage of this lens is, it doesn’t have a multi-layer optic coating. So, it’s vulnerable to flare or ghosting.
Canon 85mm lens gain popularity for having a large aperture (f/1.8) allowing the photographer to shoot at hand-held no matter how challenging the light conditions are. Accompanied with a short telephoto focal length, this lens can slightly compress perspective and reduce the size of all prominent facial features for a much better and flattering result.
Its other key features are:
- This lens is equipped with E-TTL II flash metering system that guarantees flash exposures to be always accurate in any wider set of circumstances.

What are USM and HSM?
In DLSR camera lens, there are acronyms stated that some people are unaware of its meaning or purpose. Today we’ll answer the question, what are USM and HSM?
Those two acronyms are a focus motor. Focus motor is integrated into the lens and designed to acquire focus for fast-moving subjects; while still maintaining the control for focus accuracy, smoothness and silence.
There are different types of focus motor and it all depends on the brand.
For Canon, they have the Ultra Sonic Motor (USM). USM motors work by converting ultrasonic vibration energy into rotational force to move the lens. One advantage of USM is, it allows users to manually adjust the focus without the need to switch the autofocus off.
For Sigma, they have the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). HSM works by ensuring to provide a quiet and high-speed autofocusing.
In this date and age, DSLR cameras’ functionality has indeed evolved. Now, it’s not only good for shooting still images but also for recording high-resolution videos.
So, if you’re going to look for lenses make sure to find the right lens that matches the need of the camera, and yourself as well. This is to ensure you’ll get the most out of your DSLR camera.

- This lens produces better image quality than most zooms lens. With the help of its aperture f/1.8, photographers can create superb bokeh and shoot in low-light conditions.
It’s just a huge plus that this lens is affordable too.
