If there’s one Sony A-mount mirrorless camera that captured the hearts of many, it will be the A6000. They enjoy using this camera because it’s portable, has an improved processor and resolution, and exceptional image quality.
So, if you’re into day and night portrait, landscape, sports action and sunset photography; Sony A6000 is the best DSLR camera to bring.
What are the best Sony A6000 accessories?
If you have this camera, you’re probably looking for helpful accessories to match it. There are six accessories that every photographer should have, especially during travels, and they are:
Sony A6000 is powered by NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. It weighs 42g with 1020mah power and can take up to 360 shots of still images per charge.
If you’re looking for an additional battery, it’s advisable to find Sony A6000 exact type. But if you don’t find one on your location, you can always depend on a good replacement. The battery replacement we recommend is Wasabi Power Battery.
We chose the Wasabi power battery because it has the same specification with NP-FW50 but with a longer life, 1300mah. So, you can guarantee that the fun of your journey wouldn’t stop just because you ran out of battery.
2. Battery Grip
To ensure you’ll get the most out of your Sony A6000 is to extend its’ battery life. The NP-FW50 has a long and accurate life expectancy, but it isn’t enough if you’re on a week-long hiking or outdoor trip.
You can double your battery’s life by using a battery grip. Sadly, Sony doesn’t have an available battery grip for A6000. But don’t worry, there tons of available third-party battery grips on the market designed for Sony A6000.
The one we recommend is Meike MK-A6300 Vertical Shooting Grip. We chose this battery grip because it weighs 15.8 ounces, water, and dust resistant, and can hold up to two NP-FW50 rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries.
This battery grip also equipped with a wired controlled shutter release button that is beneficial to use for shooting in a vertical position.
3. External flash
When it comes to external flash, Sony has 6 available products to offer. If we have to recommend one, we will choose Sony HVL-F43M High Power Flash.
Sony HVL-F43M High Power Flash has a guide number of 43. The guide number is the one that identifies the flash unit’s ability to brighten your subject at a certain distance.
To know the right distance between the flash unit and your subject using Sony A6000, you have to follow the below formula:
Guide Number (GN) = distance (m) x aperture (F-number)
Sony A6000 lens has an aperture range of f/3.5–f/5.6. If you use f/5.6 to HVL-F43M High Power Flash, the distance the flash unit to your subject will be 7.68 meters.
Also, HVL-F43M High Power Flash is equipped with Quick Shift Bounce system. This system’s purpose is to maintain balance distribution of the light by allowing this flash unit to revolve in a 90-degree angle, left and right.
Lastly, HVL-F43M High Power Flash is dust and moisture resistant, one feature that Sony A6000 doesn’t have. So, you can assure that you’ll enjoy this flash unit for a longer time.
4. Memory card
When buying a memory card, you should check first your camera’s available slot and compatible storage media type. For Sony A6000, it has one memory card slot available, and its’ compatible storage media types are MS PRO Duo, SD, SDHC and SDXC that supports UHS-I technology.
There are lots of memory cards compatible with Sony A6000, but the one we recommend is SanDisk Extreme Pro memory card.
SanDisk Extreme Pro memory card has a read and write speed up to 95 MB/s and 90 MB/s, respectively. While the speed class it supports for videos is C10, U3, and V30. From this, you’ll know that storing and transferring files will be exceptionally fast and accurate.
Just like the external flash unit, mentioned above, SanDisk Extreme Pro has environmental seals such as shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof for added protection.
A camera shake is one problem you can’t avoid during a photo shoots. But one good thing about it, it can be controlled. Sony A6000 has an anti-motion blur mode that can minimize blurring caused by unintended camera shakes.
Though this mode is helpful, you still need to find an accessory that can keep your camera steady. The first accessory that comes to mind is a tripod.
A tripod is one of the best Sony A6000 accessories because it gives you comfort, and helps you capture sharp images. Sony has 1 tripod available for A6000 and that is VCT-P300 portable tripod.
This tripod has six leg sections, a height of 62 1/2 –inch when legs are extended (14 3/8-inch if not), and weigh 1.4kg. Each leg sections are flexible to use. You can move it either up and down tilt, left-and-right pan, and side-to-side tilt.
One disadvantage of the VCT-P300 tripod is it’s quite hard to find. That’s the reason we find a great replacement for it, and it’s ZOMEi Z818 Lightweight DSLR Tripod. Aside from being light, as stated in its name, this tripod is compact and versatile to use.
ZOMEi Z818 Lightweight DSLR Tripod is a foldable tripod with a height of 65 inches when in use, and 18 inches if not. You can position it in five different ways on the ground:
- You can use it as a monopod.
- Adjust the four leg section 2-3 inches apart from each other and position the camera lens up. This is good for capturing the night sky or stars.
- Position its three legs to form a triangle and tilted the camera around 45-degree down. This is good for capturing food or products.
- Repeat number the leg sections position in number 2, but this time, put a wider distance between each leg section; while the camera is in its normal position when shooting wildlife.
- Lastly, keep the leg sections’ position in number 3 then invert the center column. This is good for capturing macro subjects.
The ZOMEi Z818 Lightweight DSLR Tripod usually includes a ball head, Allen wrench, quick release plate, additional center column, an international standard screw and a manual. It also comes in 5 different colors: Black, Golden, Blue, Orange, and Silver.
6. Light Modifier
If you’re using an external flash, you’ll also need a light modifier. This is where Softbox reflectors become helpful. The Softbox reflectors are designed to give soft and balanced light in the room.
The key to its effectivity lies on where you place them, place it on top of the external flash and it will create a soft and beautiful directional light.
For Sony A6000, we recommend Neewer 16″/40cm Portable Mini Round Soft Box reflector. This Softbox reflector has a 16-inch diameter and 142g weight. It also comes in two colors: white and grey.
The white color is to illuminate the room, while the grey color helps to set the exposure and white-balance.
This Softbox reflector is great to use in softening the harsh light for outdoor, product, portraits, studio work, and event photography.
But if you’re not a fan of Softbox reflector, you can always use disc light reflectors. A disc light reflector is a great help in manipulating the light. Neewer also offers a 43-inch round collapsible multi-disc Light Reflector.
It comes in 5 different colors, and each has the following purpose:
- Silver is the reflective side. It’s being used to illuminate the shadows and highlights of your subject.
- Gold works the same as the silver color. Their difference is it can add a warmer color to the image.
- Black is the side you need to use if you want to decrease the light to create dramatic shadows.
- White enhances the shadow to produce a softer light.
- Translucent isn’t a reflector, but a diffuser. Its main purpose is to soften the sun’s natural light.
7. Shutter Remote Control
Another method to avoid camera shakes is by using shutter remote control. It’s simple to use, you just have to position your camera on a tripod and when that perfect moment comes, you can press the shutter remote control.
For A6000, Sony designed two remote controls: smartphone and remote control.
For the smartphone, you need to download the application first before using it. But if you’re not a huge fan of it, you can always choose Sony wireless RMT-DSLR2 Remote Commander.
The RMT-DSLR2 Remote Commander weighs 27g and available in black color. Aside from controlling the shutter release, you can also control:
- the start and stop of video recording;
- the single shot and burst mode, as well as, the 2-second Self Timer control;
- and the Slideshow Playback.
Accessories serve as a helping hand of your camera. Use them all properly, and you’ll surely have the best time of your life shooting your subjects. A little tip: if you’re just starting up in photography, it’s best not to buy all the accessories at once. Just buy them when you needed it.
